Lower Extremity Ulcers

• Lower extremity ulcers are the most common Chronic Wound

Venous Ulcers

• 1-2% of the U.S. population is diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insuficiency (postphlebetic syndrome)
• 1% of population suffer from venous ulcers
• Women 3X’s greater risk of ulceration
• 7.5X’s greater in individuals >65 y.o.
• 91% of venous ulcers can be resolved through conservative measures
• 13-81% recurrence rate in venous ulcers

Arterial Ulcers

• 5-10% of all LE ulcers are due to arterial insufficiency
• 5% of all amputations due to arterial insufficiency
• Prevalence of asymptomatic arterial insufficiency is greater than symptomatic disease (intermittent claudication).
• Prevalence of symptomatic disease is greater than that of ulceration.

Diabetes

• 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.
• 1990-1998 prevalence has increased from 4.9% to 6.5%
• 17 million people affected with diabetes in the U.S
• 10.2 -13.4 million undiagnosed
• 16 more million have pre-diabetes (impaired glucose tolerance)
• 15% of all people with diabetes eventually suffer from a foot ulcer

Pressure Ulcers

• 1.5 to 3 million adults living with pressure ulcers currently in the US
• > 1 million people develop pressure ulcers each year
• cost- $40,000 per ulcer.

We wish to provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas. We hope to broaden the horizons of collaboration to all individuals and organizations that may have novel and innovative approaches to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of wounds and other assaults on skin integrity. We would endeavor to bring these ideas to the laboratory bench and to the bedside, in the most logical and expeditious fashion.

We are committed to the education of the patient, their families, and their treating physicians, with regards to the pathophysiology, diagnostic alternatives, all therapeutic options, and preventive strategies available.

We will endeavor to provide this information in multiple formats in an effort to optimize incorporation of these strategies into the daily routine of the patient, family and physician. This will be critical in successfully resolving wounds and preventing recurrence.
